So You Think I’m Stupid?

So you think I'm stupid' is a short documentary which explores Drug Awareness, made by Holyk Films for Djanogly City Academy and Real United. Funded by Nottingham Crime and Druge partnership and the academy, the documentary, explores the attitude towards drugs that a group of young people from Djanogly have. Their aim is to make people aware that there is more to life then drugs, proving this over 4 weeks, by writing, rehearsing and performing a song to amplify their positive thinking and their new outlook on life.

Formerly Djanogly City Technology College, on 26th August 2003 Djanogly City Academy Nottingham officially opened as one of the first of a new type of state-funded specialist schools. The City Academy’s specialism is Information and Communication Technology (ICT) which is used extensively to improve learning and teaching and will give greater chances of success to even more young people living in the inner city of Nottingham. The Academy has welcomed the support of the Real United Community mentors as part of their early intervention strategy helping to raise the self-esteem and aspirations of the young people in their care..

Real United Football Mentoring Academy is a community football club which was developed in May 2008. It was primarily set up to reduce substance misuse and related criminal activity amongst young people in Nottingham. Real United has had an impact on the wider community as it has acted as a pro-active strategy in developing confidence and self-esteem of the individuals. Secondly, as the programme places a strong emphasis on developing the self-worth of the players to become better citizens within their community, they in turn have gained a desire to act as mentors for young people who were at risk of entering into a life of crime and drugs.

After securing funding from the Youth Opportunity Fund a group of young people based in The Meadows, Nottingham, started a music project called ‘My Shout’.

During the first six months of 2009 the young people of ‘My Shout’ have recorded a multitude of songs and made their first music video, and the project, co-ordinated by MC Spyda, has supported the young people, helping them to express their creative talents.

The aim of the project has encouraged the young people to write positive lyrics, engage with others and create songs that will appeal to a wider audience. In addition, the project offered confidence building, recognised accreditations, hands-on studio experience and ownership of a project as a whole.

‘Somewhere to Go, Something to Do’ is the result of the young peoples dedication and perseverance, and Splurj is proud to have been involved in such a positive movement in urban music and congratulates the young people of ‘My Shout’.
